I’ve been upset before in my life.

Thought that things were ending.

Thought that I was the only one on my side, that the world was out to get me.

I felt that way when I turned down the offer from my mom and dad to take over the family business when they were gone.

Sure, they were pissed.

Yeah, they cut off contact with me.

But I honestly thought that we were still family. I never once thought that they would ever do anything to hurt me, but what I’m seeing right now with my own eyes tells me that everything I’ve ever thought about my family was wrong.

My parents just tried to have me killed.

For the third time today.

Luke’s arms around me are the only things that I can trust and I lean into his embrace, allowing my body to fully relax so that he’s supporting me. I feel like I’m drowning and I can’t get enough air in my lungs.

Even so, I need to know what’s going on.

Planting my hands on his chest, I push back. He’s so strong, so solid, the only thing that I can trust right now.

Right?

As soon as I think about him being the only thing that I can trust, a flash of fear shoots through me. My dad hired him. My dad reached out to him, offered to pay him a shit ton of money to keep me safe.

How in the hell do I know that I can really trust Luke?

I turn to him, fear creeping through my veins. The air has gotten cool and I can smell that someone, somewhere, is grilling burgers, but even though I’d normally want one, my stomach turns now.

I don’t know what to do and the only thing that I can think of is to get away from Luke as quickly as possible. He sees the look on my face and stands up, reaching out to pull me to him, but I take a step back.

“Mona? Are you okay?”

I want to answer him but I don’t trust myself not to start crying, so I just shake my head and move a little bit farther away from him. He doesn’t follow me this time, but his eyes are locked on me as if he thinks that he’ll be able to see through to what the problem is.

“Mona. I know this is terrifying, but now that we know the truth, we can get some help, okay? We can figure out what we need to do to keep you safe.”

I open my mouth and close it. How in the hell am I supposed to tell this man that I’m not sure if I can trust him after tonight? So far, he’s done nothing but try to keep me safe.

But my dad hired him, and he would have done that for a reason. That’s what scares me.

“Why did my dad hire you?” I finally ask, spitting out the words? “Why you, why not someone he knows better?”

We’re both silent for a moment, the words hanging between us like an accusation, and Luke shrugs.
